IBM Thinkpad T40, T41 and T42 Laptops
Despite being around 6 years old, IBM T40, T41 and T42 laptops can still provide a decent workhorse machine if you are just doing a bit of web-surfing and maybe some light document/spreadsheet work.
These machines were designed for corporate use i.e. business users so they tend to be reliable and well-built.
Some T40, T41 and T42s initially shipped with just 256MB of RAM so should you buy one an upgrade is definitely recommended. You can use a maximum of 2GB in these laptops. To upgrade, buy some "PC2700 DDR SDRAM 200-pin SODIMM" memory from a site like eBay, dabs.com or Crucial.com.
Likewise, the hard disk drives provided in these machines were usually around 30GB so you will probably want to increase this with a new drive - look for an "IDE 2.5" Laptop Hard Drive".
Drivers, BIOS updates and utilities for the T40, T41 and T42 laptops can be found on the Lenovo.com website.
