Lenovo Thinkpad T400 Laptops
At first glance the Lenovo Thinkpad T400 looks pretty much exactly the same as the T61.
It comes in black - with no option for a color change - this is a business machine after all.
It has the same shape as the T61, has the same keyboard design, almost the same LEDs underneath the screen and the ports all seem to be in the same position.
However, there are some differences and the T400 is definitely an improvement on the T61.
First of all, the PCMCIA slot has been changed to a small PCMCIA slot.
The standard battery supplied with the machine has been extended in size and therefore life. That means you are going to be able to use your T400 for longer when out on the road.
Standard spec usually means 2GB of RAM and 160GB hard disk drive space so this laptop really will not need upgrading any time soon.
However, if you want to upgrade the RAM in a T400 you will need to buy either DDR3 PC3-8500 or DDR3 PC3-10600 to a maximum of 8GB. As the machine has two slots that means a maximum of 2 x 4GB sticks. What you should remember, though, is that many 32-bit operating systems will support a maximum of 3-4 GB of RAM.
As for the hard disk drive, upgrade this using a 2.5" SATA hard disk drive and you are set.
Just as with the T61 the RAM is accessed underneath the palm rest whilst the HDD can be replaced by removing a single screw on the underside of the laptop and replacing the existing hard drive in its cradle.
In conclusion, the Lenovo T400 is a superb business machine of high specification that, with a little care, will last for many years. A highly recommended buy.
